Speaking to Off The Ball, boxer Jason Quigley opened up about his disillusionment with boxing and trying to rebound after his loss to Tureano Johnson.
The Donegal boxer said that getting injured made him re-evaluate what he thought about boxing.
“The boxing game doesn’t really hold too many good personalities in it for long. There’s a lot of people who are in it for one thing and that’s to make money,” said Jason.
“It’s very hard to find genuine people in the sport. For a while it made me think 'what is this game all about?'"
While he understands that it's the nature of the sport, he did have his doubts about continuing.
“I’ve only really come to terms with that side of boxing recently.
"There have been a few negative thoughts that went through my head, especially when I saw that Russian boxer [Maxim Dadashev] who passed away, it made me think 'Is this sport even worth it?'
“Of course it’s a dog-eat-dog kind of a sport, but it’s difficult to thrive in an environment like that. I noticed through my injury that I was kind of forgotten about for a while."
After the first loss of his career, Jason knows he has a number of areas to improve on but doesn't want to rush into anything.
“There are two personalities, there’s the fighter in me that says I want to avenge the defeat.
"That’s my heart speaking - my pride and passion - but I know in my head it would be silly to step back in the ring against Tureano.”
Quigley had some choice words as well for former boxer Matthew Macklin who criticised Quigley's management team, calling their guidance "absolutely shocking" after the defeat.
“I know Matthew very well and I was a bit disappointed to see him come out so publicly. I have his number and we’ve talked about it before,” said Jason.
“If he really wanted to help and was really that concerned about it why didn’t he call me? He didn’t have to go out and fire it all over social media.”
