Ireland humble South Africa in Malahide to take one-day series lead

Ireland have beaten South Africa by 43-runs in their second one-day international in Malahide.

A century from captain Andy Balbirnie helped the hosts post a score of 290 for 5 from their 50 overs.

Harry Tector also added 79, while George Dockrell scored a vital 45.

Josh Little, Mark Adair and Andy McBrine each took a pair of wickets as Ireland bowled out the visitors for 247.

It's Ireland's first ever win over the South Africans, and earns them 10 crucial World Cup Super League points that sees them move up to fifth in the table.

"Extremely proud," said player of the match Balbirnie, "Put in on a greenish wicket. It was a tough wicket to take wickets on.

"It was a win we needed as a team. Really proud of the lads.

We out-fielded them, which made the difference. We need such efforts to beat these nations.

"Huge day for cricket in Ireland. We'll have a couple of beers and enjoy. But at the same time, we are hungry to win the series.

"[Exciting] to face players of that calibre, and get a decent score is great. We had a really bad series in the Netherlands, and we are really pushing that to get the [Super League] points."

The sides will meet again on Friday.
