Confirmed - Katie Taylor fight off as BBBofC suspends all May events

The final confirmation that the super-fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is off has come this afternoon from the British Boxing Board of Control.

Taylor was due to put her undisputed lightweight crown on the line at the Manchester Arena on May 2 against the former seven-weight world champ from Puerto Rico.

A week ago the BBBofC originally cancelled all events until the end of April but it has released a statement today announcing an extension.

"The British Boxing Board of Control has further extended its suspension of Boxing Tournaments under its jurisdiction for the month of May," the statement reads.

"We will continue to follow the Government and Medical Authorities advice and keep the situation under review and when possible explore all options available to find a way of lifting the suspension when conditions permit.

"We would like to re-emphasise that our thoughts are with everyone affected by Covid-19.

"Please stay home and stay safe."

The Taylor v Serrano fight was part of a big Matchroom Boxing card in Manchester, headlined by the clash of Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin for the WBC Interim Heavyweight title.

It was expected that Taylor's promoter and the boss of Matchroom, Eddie Hearn, would confirm the postponement on Monday.

"We'll make an announcement on Monday about Dillian Whyte, the Cardiff show in May [9] and Chisora-Usyk - May 23", Hearn said during an Instagram Live Q&A last week, also referring to the Derek Chisora bout against Oleksandr Usyk at The O2 in London on May 23.

However, Serrano took to Twitter over the weekend to let her fans know.

"To all my fans that keep asking me YES! my May 2nd fight has been postponed, a new date to be announced soon," Serrano tweeted.

"It has Nothing to do w/myself or my opponent Everyone knows the Critical Crisis we are in. This Covid-19 is serious, please be safe out there. God bless us all."
