Ayeisha McFerran: "It's hard for people to take that time off work and not get paid"

Ireland's Ayeisha McFerran has highlighted what needs to be done to build on the success of winning a silver medal at the World Cup in London.

The Irish were well beaten by Holland in the final but exceeded expectations by firstly, qualifying top of their pool and secondly, going on to make the final.

They ultimately fell short against a brilliant Dutch side and asked by Off the Ball's Stephen Doyle afterwards what she thinks the squad need to do to improve, she said: "More time together. We've been together, near enough, since May.

"We've had a lot of games, training, what not and it kind of showed what we were able to do so I think the more time we get together as a whole squad - then we're only going to get better and get consistent performances that we can go out and catch them and other nations above us as well.

"Honestly, it just comes down to funding. It's hard for people to take that time off work and not get paid.

"We're very much an amateur set-up in Irish Hockey and that's nothing to do with people who run it - it's difficult to get the funding behind.

"We know we've set ourselves a platform there and we came out with the mantra of 'No Excuses'. We didn't let anything phase us and if we go out and enjoy the tournament and show what we can do through all this - then you never know what will happen in the future.

"So, hopefully more people will get behind us, believe in us as much as we believe in ourselves and we'll get that structure in place and hopefully go forward and get more of a professional set up for ourselves," she added.
