Women's National League to get underway in August

The Women's National League will finally get underway in mid-August.

The 2020 season was due to begin in March, but was halted before the first whistle was blown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first series of games will now be played on the second weekend in August (8-9).

Every team will play another once under 'phase one', with 'phase two' seeing the league split in two before another round of games in each section.

To facilitate the resumption of the women's top flight, the FAI have made a financial package available to the nine clubs.

In a statement, the WNL say, "affiliation fees have waived, a participation grant will be provided, prize money will be spread out equally, and there will be funds available to ensure all clubs can upgrade their grounds to follow safety protocols."

A special COVID-19 Assistance Grant will also be made available for clubs who have suffered financial losses because of the lack of football accompanying the pandemic.

Women's National League Committee chair Myles Kelly said, "The Women’s National League Committee held a meeting with the senior clubs in the Women’s National League on July 2nd, 2020.

"The meeting outlined a significant financial package to aid the clubs for a new start date in early August for the 2020 Women’s National League.

"The Women’s National League Committee would like to thank the clubs for their forbearance through this difficult time and also the FAI for the financial package which allows the League to be completed in 2020."
