Villas-Boas calls for clubs to retire the No. 10 jersey as tribute to Maradona

Andre Villas-Boas has called for all football clubs to retire the No. 10 jersey in tribute to Diego Maradona after he passed away at the age of 60.

The 1986 World Cup-winning captain suffered a heart attack in Buenos Aires on Wednesday and his body will lie in state at the presidential palace during that time.

Argentina has entered three days of mourning for the football legend, who had surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain last month.

Maradona's former club Napoli have announced that San Paolo stadium in Naples is set to be renamed in his honour.

Maradona guided Napoli to two Serie A titles during his time in Naples and the lights at the San Paolo were left on on Wednesday night to mark his passing.

Marseille boss Villas-Boas wants the sport to come together by retiring the no.10 shirt from the game.

"Maradona yes it is tough news, I would like FIFA to retire the No.10 shirt in all competitions, for all teams," said Villas-Boas.

"It would be the best homage we could do for him. He is an incredible loss for the world of football."
