UEFA pencil in August date for Champions League final

UEFA will hold another conference call next week where they are set to announce a new date of August 29th for the Champions League final in Istanbul.

European football's governing body are keen to complete the 2019/20 football calendar, but the environment is fluid due to restrictions around the coronavirus pandemic.

One deliberation may be to finish certain club seasons early, but that is not believed to be the preferred option.

Options around the Champions League could relate to hosting the quarter finals and semi finals in July and August, or to play matches as one legged ties at the conclusion of domestic campaigns in a 'tournament style' format.

Four of the eight Champions League quarter finalists are already known, with Manchester City to still conclude their last 16 tie with Real Madrid.

The Europa League Final will be tentatively scheduled for Gdansk on August 26th.

UEFA will also discuss the future of club competitions, off the back of a Premier League conference call today.

The intention is for the Premier League to be completed by June 30th, so that legal issues around contracts and commercial deals are not triggered.

Whether such a calendar can be adhered to will depend on the European public health environment.
