Rotherham fend off UK competition to land signing of Georgie Kelly

Georgie Kelly is officially a Rotherham United player.

The English League One club confirmed the signing of last year's PFAI Player of the Year on Friday evening.

Kelly was the SSE Airtricity Premier Division's top scorer with 21 goals in 2021, which led to interest from clubs in Scotland and Plymouth Argyle.

Rotherham sit third in the League One table, and are already home to Republic of Ireland international winger Chiedoze Ogbene, and U21 striker JJ Kayode.

Earlier in the day, the Millers confirmed the sale of former Ireland U21 winger Kieran Sadlier to fellow League One side Bolton.

Asked why he opted for Rotherham, given the interest from elsewhere, Kelly replied, "Just the stature of the club.

"The most important thing is probably the people. I spoke to the gaffer, Warney [Paul Warne] and the staff, and I just think I'll fit in really well here. It's a club that'll suit me."

Kelly was out of contract at Dalymount Park, and informed Bohs - and other domestic suitors - that he wanted to pursue options outside of the country.

"It was a good year last year," said the Donegal native, "A couple of years before that I probably hadn't played as much, and been second string in different places.

"So I had a right go at it last year, and played a lot of games, and I scored a lot of goals so just looking forward now to see how this goes - these next few years."

Kelly's under no illusions that he won't be able to walk into Warne's team, who are genuine contenders for promotion to the Championship.

Despite recent away defeats at Accrington and Fleetwood, Rotherham are just a point off second-placed Sunderland, with two games in hand.

"You've Michael Smith and Freddie [Lapado], Will [Grigg]... you've loads of talented strikers.

"So I know rightly it's going to be a challenge, but I'm coming here to work and learn. I've a good bit to go yet in regards to where I can get to.

"I just can't wait to get going now, and get in, and improve over the next couple of months."
