Roma legend to leave club

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi's 18-year playing career at the club will come to a close at the end of this season.

The World Cup winner will call it a day with the Serie A side after Roma's final league game against Parma on May 26.

The 35-year-old, who joined the club in 2000 has made 615 appearances and scored 63 goals for them. Only Francesco Totti, with 786 appearances, has played more matches in a Roma shirt than De Rossi.

De Rossi won the Coppa Italia in 2007 and 2008, as well as Supercoppa in 2007, during his time with Roma. He's also the fourth-most capped player in Italy history, with 117 appearances, and represented the Azzurri at eight major international tournaments, including the World Cup in 2006.

Roma said in a statement: " De Rossi will not be retiring from professional football at the end of the current season. The 35-year-old plans to pursue a new adventure away from Rome."

Club president Jim Pallotta said: "For 18 years, Daniele has been the beating heart of AS Roma. He has always embodied the Roma player and fan on the field with pride, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe, starting from his debut in 2001 until he assumed responsibility for the captain's armband.

"We will all be moved when, against Parma, he wears the Giallorossi jersey for the last time and we respect the decision to continue his footballing career, even if, at almost 36, he will be away from Rome.

"On behalf of the whole company, I want to thank Daniele for the extraordinary efforts made for the club. The doors of Rome will always remain open to him with a new role at any time he will decide to return."
