"Don't give me the ball" - Pat Nevin's anecdote about an ex-England international "hiding" on the pitch

While Granit Xhaka's conflict with the Arsenal's fanbase caught Pat Nevin's eye like for everyone else, the former Chelsea and Everton winger also noted the Swiss midfielder's unwillingness to get on the ball.

"One of the things on a football pitch, everybody thinks everyone wants the ball all the time. But it's not the case," he told Off The Ball as he joined us ahead of Wednesday night's Carabao Cup fixtures.

"And [Xhaka] wasn't going looking for that ball and it was really interesting to see. That was a stunning thing. If a guy like him is 'hiding' on the pitch, there's something massively, massively wrong there."

"Hiding"

Pat also shared an anecdote from his own career which features a team-mate "hiding" on the pitch. And it was an unnamed former England international.

"I personally felt it purely from another angle," he said of the habit for some players to do that.

"All I'd see is backsides sometimes. You get the ball, take it around somebody and look up. You don't see any faces and you think, 'What's going on here?'.

"It does happen. I played with one top international centre-back and his stock phrase was - in training and games - 'Don't give me the ball!'.

"That was his phrase. He played for England at centre-back and played for one of the teams I played for. A very well-known figure but he didn't want to play football. He just wanted to mark and it's horrible that, when you're getting closed down, you need everybody to help you out to give you a face and an angle. So it does happen."
