Manchester United's midweek Premier League game with Brentford is in doubt following a COVID-19 outbreak at the club.

The Premier League giants have taken the step of closing their Carrington training base for 24 hours.

United are due to be in West London on Tuesday night for a Premier League game with Brentford.

The squad that travelled to Norwich on the weekend all returned negative coronavirus tests. However, a small number of positive lateral flow tests were flagged among the players and staff.

United said in a statement on Monday afternoon that they are in contact with the Premier League regarding the safety and viability of Tuesday's trip to Brentford.

This past weekend saw Tottenham's game with Brighton postponed on account of a COVID-19 outbreak at Spurs.

When asked about United's Covid-related issues, Brentford boss Thomas Frank said, "We are just missing last year's top goal scorer [Ivan Toney], one of our best centre-backs and I think we are playing one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"Decent players, no.7 Ronaldo, Rashford and Fernandes - the most creative player in the Premier League in the last two years.

"I think it will even out."

Manchester United statement:

Manchester United can confirm that following PCR test confirmation of yesterday’s positive LFT Covid-19 cases among the first team staff and players, the decision has been taken to close down first team operations at the Carrington Training Complex for 24 hours, to minimise risk of any further infection.

Individuals who tested positive are isolating per Premier League protocols.

Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the Club is in discussion with the Premier League whether it is safe for Tuesday’s fixture against Brentford to continue, both from a Covid infection and player preparation perspective.

Team and staff travel to London will be deferred pending the result of that discussion.
