John Foley turns down FAI CEO interim role

The FAI has more problems with the news that John Foley has decided not to take up an appointment as new interim CEO of the organisation.

The former Athletics Ireland chief executive had agreed to replace Noel Mooney, whose term in charge ended over the weekend.

However, Foley has chosen against taking up the position at the last minute, stating that he felt he didn’t have enough support in the FAI.

Foley was expected to step into the role on a temporary basis ahead of an important few weeks for the FAI with the deferred AGM set to take place at the end of the month.

It had been hoped that Foley would start work this week and look for a resolution with Minister for Sport Shane Ross after public funding was cut by the Minister earlier this year.

The appointment of Foley was intended as an attempt to build bridges with the government

A statement from the FAI read: "The Board of the FAI notes with great regret John Foley’s decision not to accept the role of Interim CEO with the Football Association of Ireland.

"Throughout our dealings with John, his suitability for the role was beyond question and the level of professionalism and clarity he could bring to the Association would have been invaluable.

"John’s experience and influence will be especially missed by our staff who would have benefitted greatly from his arrival.

"The Board of the FAI will meet to discuss the next steps."
