Harvey Elliott signs first professional deal at Liverpool

Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott has signed his first professional contract with the Premier League champions.

Elliott only became eligible for pro terms in April when he turned 17.

The London-born winger has played in two Premier League games this season, and been an unused substitute on six more occasions.

However, Elliott has impressed in the English cup competitions, starting in all six of the Reds' EFL and FA Cup matches this term.

The senior players and the coaches really care about him

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp welcomed the "brilliant news" of Elliott's new contract, saying, "I love his attitude – love his enthusiasm – love his bravery – love the fact he has the right amount of football confidence and cheekiness.

"I think the public maybe doesn’t know the real Harvey yet and part of that is because we have looked to shield and protect him."

Klopp also told LiverpoolFC.com, "What is critical – so important – is that he is given time and space to develop. He will get that from us.

"He needs to be allowed to make mistakes while he learns and not feel more pressure than is right and fair.

"He is young and he is in the early stages of his development still.

"What is great is that he has the perfect culture here and we will protect him. The senior players and the coaches really care about him and are as excited as I am about his future.

"So, we will all be part of his story as it unfolds."

Elliott joined from Fulham a year ago, and has gone on to be part of a Premier League-winning and Club World Cup-winning squad.

The lifelong Liverpool fan agrees that Melwood is the perfect place to develop as a player, "When you come here, there's not an expectation as in you need to stick to what you've been told.

"For youngsters, especially like me, people always tell me to just go and express myself, to enjoy football and always have a smile on my face but more importantly work hard for the club.

"For youngsters, to come here is such a friendly environment from the staff down to the players – everyone is helpful, everyone is willing to push you and everyone's wanting you to be the best. "
