Greenwood issues apology for breach of coronavirus rules in Iceland

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has issued a statement after been dropped from the England squad for Tuesday's Nations League game with Denmark.

Greenwood and Manchester City's Phil Foden broke COVID-19 protocols at the England team hotel following Saturday's win over Iceland.

The two players were sent home after two women came to the team hotel on Sunday night, a day after both players made their senior international debuts.

The breach of coronavirus rules occurred outside of the part of the hotel the English FA had booked for the squad.

Foden issued a lengthy apology on Monday, while Greenwood deleted his personal Twitter account.

The 18-year-old United striker released a statement on Tuesday via Manchester United.

"Having now had the chance to reflect on what’s happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused.

"It was irresponsible of me to break the COVID-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

"In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down, when he had shown great trust in me.

"Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

"I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from."

The FA has launched a full investigation into the incident, while UEFA felt there was no need for the meeting of Denmark and England in Copenhagen to be compromised.

The new Premier League season kicks off on September 12th but both Manchester clubs won't be in action until the second weekend due to their involvement in European competitions in August.
