Former Republic of Ireland international takes over Scottish club

Jim Goodwin has taken over the role of manager at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

The Waterford native got his one and only cap for the Republic of Ireland in a friendly against Finland in Helsinki in August 2002.

The 37-year-old had been captain of the Under-21 team before making the step-up to the senior side, coming off the bench to replace Robbie Keane in a 3-0 win.

Goodwin has joined the Paisley team on a three-year deal after being in charge of Scottish Championship side Alloa Athletic since October 2016, winning promotion from League One in the 2016-17 season.

Throughout his playing career with the Saints, he made over 150 appearances, scoring three goals and captained the team to League Cup glory in 2013, defeating Hearts 3-2 and lifting their trophy for the one and only time in their history.

He was also inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in October 2017.

Speaking on his appointment as manager, Goodwin said: "I am absolutely delighted to have been offered the job as manager of this great club.

"I had three wonderful seasons at Alloa and loved every minute of it, but the opportunity to come back to the place where I had my most memorable spell as a player was too good to turn down.

"This is a very proud moment for me and one I will never take for granted. I'm looking forward to meeting the staff and players next week, and genuinely can't wait to get started."

Chairman of the club Gordon Scott has backed the appointment of a popular manager, "I am absolutely delighted to welcome Jim back to St Mirren.

"He was a firm fans favourite as a player here and I know he will receive terrific backing from our support as our new manager.

"I would like to thank Alloa Athletic for their co-operation in allowing us the opportunity to speak with Jim."
