Bohemians hail "significant progress" in FAI restart talks

Bohemians say significant progress has been made following talks between the FAI and SSE Airtricity Premier Division clubs.

Bohs say there are issues still to be ironed out, but remain hopeful of resuming a truncated top flight season in the not-too distant future.

It’s believed the financial package on offer to the Premier Division clubs is now in excess of €191,000 a piece.

While they cannot divulge the details of the package on offer, Bohs say their board met on Wednesday night to "consider the updated and improved proposals".

The sporting aspect of the 2020 season is also up for discussion.

The Irish Independent's Dan McDonnell says that no firm decision has been made on promotion or relegation.

There's also the chance that this season's FAI Cup could be scrapped altogether.

It's something Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers - for one - would not favour.

The veteran stopper tweeted, "The possible loss of the FAI cup this year would be a real shame, it may also lead to the loss of a lucrative European spot for our clubs".

In his capacity as outgoing PFAI chairman, Rogers also warned that "players want promotion and relegation to ensure sporting integrity of the league."

The continued aftershocks of COVID-19 have seen the 2020-21 European qualifiers curtailed to single legs.

Bohs will enter the Europa League at the first qualifying round stage on August 27.

While admitting to being "disappointed" at the restrictions in place, the Phibsborough club say "UEFA’s proposed calendar provides the club with something tangible to aim for after those months of uncertainty.

"It is also a welcome boost for our players, who are all desperate to pull the jersey on again having returned to collective training at Dalymount Park on Monday June 8 after an absence of three months."
