'That backfired' - Solskjaer admits Rashford change was a gamble

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his decision to bring on Marcus Rashford "backfired" after the club's top scorer went off injured in the FA Cup third-round replay win over Wolves.

The England international was left on the bench but he sustained a back injury shortly after replacing Daniel James in the second half.

Juan Mata scored the winning goal to send United into the fourth round but the sight of Rashford making his way towards the tunnel put a dampener on the result.

Solskjaer said after the game: "Yeah that backfired but sometimes you have to go for them.

"He has struggled with a couple of knocks to his back lately and he got another one.

"He'll be tested in the next few days and we have to see for Sunday. He couldn't run. He struggled a little bit with his back and got another knock. It didn't help.

"He has struggled a little bit with his back before and got another knock and I think he got a knock to his knee too. He is a quick healer and he’ll play through some pain – he’s capable if it’s not a bad injury."

United now face the prospect of heading to Anfield on Sunday without Rashford, who scored for the Red Devils when the two sides drew 1-1 at Old Trafford in October.

Rashford has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season and has been key for United this season, especially against better opposition.

United are the only team to take a point off Liverpool in the Premier League this season.
