Andy Robertson to miss weeks rather than months with ankle injury

Andy Robertson will miss the start of Liverpool's Premier League season after suffering an ankle injury.

The left-back was removed from Sunday's friendly with Athletic Bilbao, and scans have revealed ligament damage.

In somewhat encouraging news for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, it's reported that Robertson's injury will keep him out for weeks rather than months.

The Scot tweeted on Monday evening to thank those who had sent him good wishes, "Thanks to everyone for the kind messages and support.

"Scan suggests nothing too major but there’s some ligament damage which will need to mend.

"I will be grafting every day so I can help the team again sooner rather than later."

19-year old Owen Beck replaced Robertson in the Bilbao friendly, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield. However, it's more likely that Kostas Tsimikas will be asked to deputise for the 27-year old when Liverpool open their Premier League campaign away to Norwich City on Sunday.

The friendlies against Spanish opposition haven't been kind to Liverpool.

On Monday night, Curtis Jones was forced off after taking knocks to the ribs and face in a game against Osasuna.

Liverpool have made only one major signing during the close season - that of Ibrahima Kounaté from RB Leipzig for €40million.

Speaking after the Bilbao game, Klopp hinted their may be further arrivals before the transfer window closes.

"I am very happy with the squad, but it doesn't mean that we don't look at the market," he said.

"But as long as nothing happens, I am more than happy with the squad I have. I am more than happy with the players I have.

"We have so many things that you cannot sign. You cannot sign our counter-pressing, you cannot sign our atmosphere that we create in the stadium, you cannot sign Anfield, you cannot sign our anthem.

"You cannot sign a lot of things and that's what we have to use. There are other approaches out there, obviously, and we have influence on that. Our situation is like it is.

"We have a big squad and there might be something happening until the end of the transfer window, but I cannot say anything about that at the moment."
