Alex Iwobi says Arsenal's target is Champions League football

Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi says the target for the club in the upcoming season is to qualify for the Champions League.

The Gunners finished the Premier League last season in fifth position, just one point behind their North-London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who took up the fourth Champions League qualification spot.

The 23-year old is with the Nigeria national squad at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the winger said, "obviously we want to get back into Champions League football. Obviously I'm still here at this competition [African Cup of Nations], we haven't spoken about our targets.

"I'm sure the whole team will want to improve on the previous season we had and try to get to the Champions League and if not try and win as many competitions including the Europa League as well."

Last season, Arsenal got to the Europa League final against London rivals Chelsea, which was held in Baku in Azerbaijan.

The game ended in comprehensive victory for the Blues - running out 4-1 winners, with Iwobi getting the Arsenal goal.

It had been the Gunners first European final since they reached the last two of the Champions League in 2006 under Arsene Wenger.

Iwobi also looked ahead towards the Premier League season saying, "you never know what could happen. I'm sure every club is going to invest and try. Pre-season is coming up soon so everyone is trying to get ready. It's hard to say right now".

Earlier this month, Arsenal made the first-team backroom addition of former player Freddie Ljungberg. The former Sweden international joined as Emery's assistant first-team coach, in a shake-up that will see Steve Bould take charge of the under-23 squad.

Nigeria have booked their place in the next round of the African Cup of Nations with a game to spare in the group stage.

It is the first time the Super Eagles are playing in the competition since they were last champions in 2013.
