Aguero hopeful of swift return as he confirms knee injury

Manchester City have confirmed that Sergio Aguero has suffered damage to his left knee.

The Argentine striker was replaced at half-time by Gabriel Jesus in City's 5-0 Premier League thrashing of Burnley on Monday night.

Speaking after last night's game, Aguero's manager Pep Guardiola feared Aguero may miss the rest of their season.

The 32-year old aggravated an old injury under a challenge from Burnley skipper, Ben Mee.

"He was struggling the last month with a problem in his knee and now he felt something but it doesn’t look good," Guardiola revealed after the game.

"The doctor says it will take time. A few games [out] for sure but maybe tomorrow the tests he will get good news. We will see."

The City boss spoke of fearing "a lot of injuries" prior to the Premier League's restart.

City are next in action on Thursday night with a trip to Chelsea, and then travel to Newcastle on Sunday.

However, Guardiola is sure to be more concerned about the club's Champions League return.

They're due to play the second leg of their last-16 tie with Real Madrid on August 7/8. City lead 2-1 from the first leg.

Aguero confirmed his injury by tweeting, "The scans I did this morning have confirmed that I have damaged my left knee.

"It’s a pity but I’m in good spirits and so focused to come back as soon as possible."

It's believed he's required surgery on his meniscus and will miss between five and seven weeks.

City confirmed that Aguero will now travel to Barcelona for further assessment under Dr. Ramon Cugat.

Dr. Cugat is a long-term client of Guardiola's and of City, with the manager previously dubbing him "the best doctor in the world".
