Off The Ball on the fallout from the Florian Fritz concussion controversy

Listen to the full interview via the podcast

In the wake of the Florian Fritz concussion incident in the match between Toulouse and Racing Metro which garnered so much controversy in France and beyond, we talked concussion on Monday Night Rugby.

We were joined by Bernard Jackman and Trevor Hogan who gave their take on the way that concussion should be dealt with.

Trevor said that the situation "is getting beyond a joke," adding that the decision to leave or remain on the field following suspected concussion should be taken out of the players' hands.

"To even think that [Fritz] was in a position to come back on after such a seriously blatant concussion...and it's still happening in a lot of games," said Trevor.

Bernard believes that independent medics should be given the priority when making such decisions.

"It takes the pressure out. It's very hard for a team doctor under pressure from staff and players to make a clear decision," said Bernard, who wants a zero tolerance policy and also discussed the potential power of players unions on the issue.

The Fritz controversy overshadowed a match-winning performance for Ireland No 10 Jonny Sexton who kicked all of Racing's 21 points in their victory over Toulouse.

Trevor and Bernard gave their take on a Racing Metro team seemingly on the up and Sexton's role in that growth for the Parisians.

The lads also previewed the Rabo Pro 12 semi-finals between Leinster and Ulster, and Munster's trip to Glasgow.
