Off The Ball documentaries earn recognition at New York Radio Awards

Two Off The Ball documentaries have earned finalist positions in the 'Sports Radio' category at the prestigious annual New York Radio Awards.

Our series 'The Classic' saw a number of radio documentaries produced for air within the last year or so, and we are delighted to have received this recognition.

The series itself included four different documentaries - on the Mayo-Meath brawl of 1996, the life, death and career of tragic racing driver Neil Shanahan, the story of Ken Doherty and his extraordinary World Snooker championship win in 1997, and the tale of when the potential for an Irish Premier League club was mentioned for a time.

You can listen back to all four podcasts of the series here.

One of the pieces that became a finalist at the New York Radio Awards was '"Mam, that's for you" - The Ken Doherty Story'.

Off The Ball's Shane Hannon spoke to Ranelagh's own Ken Doherty about life before, during, and after his historic World Snooker Championship win over Stephen Hendry in 1997.

We hear about the sad passing of Ken's father when he was young, learning the snooker trade by playing in Jason's snooker club in Ranelagh, and the inside story of how he beat the 'King of the Crucible' Hendry 23 years ago.

The narrator was Richard Chambers, the programme was produced by Shane Hannon and Eoin Brennan, while sound design was by Frank Sweeney.

The other documentary that was a finalist at these awards, 'A New Don in Dublin', went inside the story of the incredible and potentially revolutionary plan to move an English Premier League team to Dublin.

This story became known as the “The Dublin Dons” and in the mid-90’s and it threatened to change Irish football entirely, and maybe even world football.

‘A New Don in Dublin’ was narrated by Shane Dawson, the programme was produced by Shane Dawson and Eoin Brennan, while sound design was by Neil Kavanagh

The series producer of ‘The Classic’ was Eoin Brennan.

The programmes were made with the assistance of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, funded by the television licence fee.
