Do female athletes celebrate their successes enough? | Norah Casey

Do women celebrate their success as much as their male counterparts? That is the question that businesswoman Norah Casey addressed at OTB’s roadshow in Capital Dock.

The former Dragon’s Den investor said that in comparison to men, women seem more likely to spread around praise to their teammates or coworkers when they scoop up awards.

“I always say this about women, for the most part, when they’re successful they try to reach down and help somebody else up.

“It’s an exhausting job, it really is,” said Casey

“All the years that I’ve been giving women awards, from politicians to women in global life and women in sports, they’ll get up on stage and say, ‘it wasn’t me, it was my coach or it was my team.’

“Constantly referencing everyone around them rather than saying, ‘thank you, it’s all about me.’

“Now forgive me for saying this, but I’ve also sat in rooms where men have stood up and taken an award, off the back of the work some women in their team have done, and happily said that they deserve it so much.

“So I do think women hide their light under a bushel, definitely,” she said.

With the continuing success of the 20X20 campaign that launched in 2019, Casey thinks it is important for successful female athletes to take more credit for themselves because it can only further inspire young girls to participate in sport.

Referencing the three athletes sharing the stage with her (Ellen Keane, Sinéad Kane and former Olympian Jessie Barr) she said:

“The more often you [celebrate your success], the more often young women listening to the radio or looking at your photos or see your tweets think, ‘oh I can do that.’

“You’ve got all the adversity and challenges that you’ve overcome in life and you’re all great, inspirational role models for women everywhere,” said Norah Casey.
