New England Patriots release Antonio Brown

Antonio Brown has been released by the New England Patriots after playing just once for last year's SuperBowl champions.

The controversial wide receiver signed for the Pats earlier this month following his release by the Oakland Raiders.

Brown has since been accused of sexual assault by his former trainer Britney Taylor, who has waived her right to anonymity, a claim which the multiple Pro Bowler has denied.

"The New England Patriots are releasing Antonio Brown," the Patriots confirmed last night.

"We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time."

"We take all the situations with our team very seriously. There are some things we're looking into. But I'm not going to have any comment on the off-the-field situations or questions on that," coach Bill Belichick said of the decision.

Brown scored a touchdown in last week's 43-0 win over the Miami Dolphins in what proved to be the only outing of his brief time with New England.

The 31-year-old tweeted after his release: "Thank you for the opportunity @Patriots #GoWinIt"

He was traded to Oakland by the Steelers in March and has not been far from controversy since.

The wide receiver suffered frostbite on his feet during a cryotherapy treatment and was then absent from training sessions while in dispute with the NFL over his desire to use an outdated and banned model of helmet.
