‘My dad borrowed money to buy me golf clubs’ | Shane Lowry on Open success

Speaking to Off The Ball Shane Lowry said it meant a lot to be able to hand the Claret Jug to his father on Sunday.

“Look I’ve said it before but my parents sacrificed an awful lot for me when I was growing up. We're not from a wealthy family and my dad is a good hard-working man.”

“He sacrificed a lot for me, he borrowed money to buy me golf clubs and so to be able to hand him the Claret Jug was huge.”

His father has been crucial to his success and having him there as he won his first major was a special moment.

“You know my dad doesn’t miss many big tournaments so it was great to have him there when I won. To be able to win in Ireland and to have all my immediate family there, it’s just incredible."

“When I handed him the jug on the eighteenth green after the presentation he went mental like! My mom was standing right beside him and was quite embarrassed and said “Brendan stop!”, it was quite funny.”

Lowry is receiving a heroes welcome in Clara this evening in front of a crowd of around 20,000. With his granny Emmy Scanlon already becoming an overnight sensation, he is excited to share the moment with his friends and family.

“To be able to bring this home to Clara with my parents, go down to my granny and my whole family, I just can’t wait to see everyone you know.”

While he will be able to celebrate over the next days, it won't be long until the Open champion will be back training.

“It hasn't quite sunken in at the moment but things will settle down and I will get back practicing for the FedEx cup. You know I’m a major champion now so there’s a bit of a label put on you but I am going to try and be the person I’ve always been and do things my way.”

In terms of what the future holds for Lowry, he isn't putting too much pressure on himself.

“I am just going to enjoy this week first and no matter what happens I’ve got a big one in the bag and hopefully over the years I can add to that.
