Mason Greenwood out of Euro 2020 ahead of England squad announcement

Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has been ruled out of England's Euro 2020 squad due to injury.

The 19-year-old had been expected to make the cut when Gareth Southgate announces his squad later today, cutting his provisional squad from 33 down to 26.

However, his club Manchester United say Greenwood has had to withdraw his name from consideration, in order to rehab an injury that has been hampering him for much of the season.

They appear to be referencing the groin injury that kept him out of England's group stage for the U21 European Championships in March.

In a statement, the club say:

"Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from provisional England Euro 2021 squad in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the U21 European Championships in March.

"Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules.

"But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training," they say.

Greenwood had been in excellent form for United in the second half of the season, scoring six times in their final eight games, helping them to a second-place finish.

Having named a provisional squad of 33 last week, Southgate must whittle his list down to a final squad of 26 players, which will be revealed later today.

With Greenwood officially ruled out, it leaves six other players to be annexed from the wider squad.

Manchester United's Jesse Lingard, who starred on loan at West Ham in the second half of the season, is reportedly set to miss out, while it's also speculated that Trent Alexander-Arnold, James Ward-Prowse, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Ben Godfrey could be the unlucky group to miss out.

England are in Group D along with Croatia, Czech Republic and Scotland, with their first game against Croatia on June 13th at Wembley.
