The Shaw-Manc Redemption? | Liverpool-MUFC review with Brian Kerr

The Liverpool-Manchester United showdown at Anfield might not have lived up to expectation, but Luke Shaw was one of the personal winners on the day.

Shaw has often been criticised by fans for lacklustre displays, memorably causing Jose Mourinho to claim that he had to act as the left-back's 'brain'.

Brian Kerr told Off The Ball that he believes the England defender turned in a display that is starting to signify where he is in his development.

"The main thing he did was defend very well today, without any silly mistakes or misjudgements," Kerr told Off The Ball.

"There was one little hair moment early in the match where it looked like Salah might get in behind him from a diagonal ball from Jordan Henderson. He read the situation well and got back quickly goal-side."

Kerr repeated a criticism that often comes Luke Shaw's way.

"I have heard a lot of people complaining - and have made reference of it to me - about his body shape; that he is not the right body shape for a Premier League player.

"My judgement on that would be that surely Manchester United, with all the strength and conditioning people they have at the club, could deal with that.

"Maybe he did have to change a bit from where he was at the start of this season, but there was no deficiencies in his game today. None where you could say 'look, he's not quick enough on the turn, he let his man go, his concentration was poor..'

"I thought he had an excellent game today, and he almost created the winning goal with the overlap on the outside with Rashford and cut the ball back from Fernandes.

"That was a great bit of play, exactly what you want from your full-back. But what you most want from your full-back is good defending against Mo Salah - and that's what he did today."
