Gary Neville is unsure of his future as a pundit, saying that he needs to evolve if he wants to continue.
Neville, who was speaking at the Off The Ball Cadbury Roadshow at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, was afraid that he was becoming too out of touch with the game to continue as a pundit for much longer.
“I’ve not been in a changing room for three seasons. If you’re not in a changing room you do lose touch with the changing room.
“You do lose touch with the coaching. I just feel like I’m more qualified to speak about other things in football instead of what’s actually happening on the pitch,” Neville said.
The former Manchester United defender had a short stint as a manager with Valencia back in 2016 but hasn’t been involved in a managerial position since.
While he is still involved with Salford City as a co-owner, his lack of time in the changing room has led him to believe he may not be suited to punditry.
“I’m not developing my tactical knowledge or my understanding of the game. My knowledge is my knowledge and it’s not improving.
“Maybe I’m understanding a lot more about dealing with agents, dealing with club issues and finances and stuff like that because of Salford.
“So I’m improving in some areas but I just feel like commenting on football games and that I’ll have to change and evolve over the next few years,” Neville commented.
Neville has been working as a football pundit for the last seven years and in that time he feels he has given his opinion on everything there is to say about football.
“I think commentary is okay in the sense that everything’s different. But in terms of instances on the pitch that you discuss in studio, there are only so many certain types of instances you can see.
“You’ve a position on each thing. If you’ve got a position on diving or VAR, it’s the same season in and season out. It doesn’t essentially change,” Neville said.
