Lopetegui appointed Sevilla manager

Former Spain manager Julen Lopetegui is the new manager of La Liga club Sevilla.

Julen Lopetegui is back in football management after being appointed Sevilla manager. The 52-year-old only lasted four-and-a-half-months at Real Madrid before he left the club in October following a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona.

Sevilla finished sixth in La Liga last season and sacked manager Pablo Machin in March after their exit from the Europa League.

Lopetegui was sacked by Spain just two days before last year's World Cup in Russia. The 2010 world champions were one of the favourites to lift the World Cup but preparations were thrown into chaos when the Spanish football federation found out he was going to Real.

Fernando Hierro was given the job on a temporary basis and Spain lost to hosts Russia on penalties in the last 16 of the tournament.

Lopetegui was unbeaten in his 20 games in charge of Spain but he was on the lookout for a new job just ten games into the La Liga season.

Lopetegui won four, drew two and lost four, leaving Real in ninth place in the table when he was given his marching orders.
