Longford could hand walkover to Cork in NFL Division Three

Longford are considering granting already promoted Cork a walkover in Division Three of the Allianz National Football League this weekend.

The Midlanders' hopes of joining Cork in making the move up to Division Two were severely dented by their loss to Derry at the weekend and their manager Padraic Davis said yesterday that the visit of the Rebels to Pearse Park is now a 'dead rubber'.

“Anywhere that there is a dead rubber game, we shouldn’t be playing them – it’s as simple as that,” Davis said to the Irish Examiner, stressing his belief that it would be an unnecessary trip for Cork to make during Level 5 restrictions.

“So if you have a team that is already promoted or relegated, and the result of their game doesn’t have an effect on promotion or relegation, it shouldn’t be played. We’re in a pandemic so it makes no sense at all to play them.”

Should Longford concede Sunday's game, it'll see Down promoted from Division Three. The Mourne men finish out their campaign against relegated Louth on Sunday with Derry travelling to Offaly. Even if Down were to lose, they still have a head-to-head advantage over Derry.

Leitrim, who were unable to field last weekend, need a win against Tipperary to have any chance of avoiding the drop on the final day.

If Leitrim are victorious and Offaly lose to Derry in Tullamore, then scoring difference in the games between Leitrim, Offaly and Tipperary will be the deciding factor as overall scoring difference can't be used due to Leitrim handing a walkover last week.
