'Bus attack made us want to go out and kill' | Real Madrid's Valverde

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde said that the attack on the team bus going into Anfield made the team want to 'kill'.

The Uruguayan midfielder said that the objects thrown at the bus, that ended in a window being smashed, was in no way distracting to Los Blancos.

"It was nothing. I come from Peñarol, it's normal. It was nothing," the Uruguayan said.

"It gave us extra motivation, and we thought 'OK, now on the field we're going to go out to kill and to leave everything behind."

Liverpool released a statement condemning the behaviour of fans on the way into the ground before the Champions League quarter-final.

"We condemn unequivocally the actions that led to Real Madrid’s team bus being damaged during its arrival to Anfield this evening," a Liverpool spokesman said on Wednesday.

"It is totally unacceptable and shameful behaviour of a few individuals.

"We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any distress caused. We will work together with Merseyside Police to establish the facts and identify those responsible.”

Real Madrid coach

Videos on social media appeared to show Liverpool fans accosting the Real Madrid coach on its way to the ground, in scenes reminiscent of the match with Manchester City in 2018 when the team coach was attacked.

Jurgen Klopp said of the 2018 attack on the Manchester City team coach:

“It was already on the edge with the flares or whatever, which are illegal, but it is nice and special. But then people do not understand the rules," Klopp said.

"If I was to make the decision I would say it is not allowed any more. It is not possible. You had the chance, didn’t use it, sorry. It was fantastic, a historical moment and I was part of the last time it happened.

“I don’t have the words. It is idiots in this situation. How can you do that? It is not a little bit funny. It is dangerous, it feels bad. I was on a bus once when someone threw a rock. You feel it.

"It was against Cologne and someone threw it through the window. You think if that hits my head, what happens? It is not funny. It is actually the complete opposite and I am really angry about it."

The German will be encouraging his players to go toe to toe with the tournament's record winners.

"When you are 3-1 down it looks like you are already out and that means you have not a lot to lose, but we will give it a try. That's the job that we have to do. We will go for it," said Klopp.

"It's a result which showed, as a result of the performance on the night, they were better than us in the first leg and we were not as good as we could have been but it's the first half of the tie."
