"Lewis Hamilton the best thing to happen to Formula 1 in so many years" - Derek Daly

Lewis Hamilton was already among the pantheon of Formula 1's greats. But he's added yet another achievement to his record.

The British driver secured his sixth World Championship in Austin on Sunday. That puts him second on the all-time list of world drivers' champions behind Michael Schumacher.

And he's already closing in on the German's all-time wins record which sits at an outstanding 91 (Hamilton is currently on 83 with time on his side).

Comparing drivers across eras is difficult due to varying factors. But Irish former Formula 1 driver Derek Daly and journalist Chris Medland joined us to discuss just that.

"We're talking about an unbelievable athlete at the top of his game, who doesn't show any signs of tiring from the travel and the commitments," said Daly.

"And we're all going to get the question: Is he the best ever? It's hard to have that conversation but he's certainly one of the very best we've ever had the privilege of watching."

Mental Control

Daly also cited Hamilton's "mental control" as his greatest asset.

"To me, he's remarkable," he added.

Daly also pointed out that this season Hamilton hasn't always had the fastest car, with Ferrari failing to capitalise enough when they've had pace advantages.

"But Hamilton has that relentless ability to run somebody down, to always stay in the shadows, to always be ready to pounce. It has made it a fascinating championship," he said, pointing out that it's a sign of his growing maturity.

"To me, he's the most fascinating driver I've seen for many, many years. As a person. Look at his swagger, look at the way he dresses, look at what he does in the off-season. He doesn't really care. He's able to get away from the daily grind of racing, go off and get photographed on red carpets, on the islands and dancing - he is a fascinating personality.

"And to me, I think all sports success is driven by the stars of the sport and their personalities. And I think he is the best thing to happen to Formula 1 for so many years."

But how does Daly feel he compares to Schumacher and the other legends of the sport?

He sees Schumi as the "most complete driver" in history but that Lewis Hamilton "as good if not better".
