Kilkenny are the All-Ireland Camogie Champions after win over Galway

Kilkenny are the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Senior Camogie Champions for the first time since 2016.

That's after they beat Galway on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-11 at Croke Park on Saturday evening.

Denise Gaule's penalty was the crucial score with just two minutes of normal time left to play.

Galway were hoping to retain the O'Duffy Cup for the first time ever but it was the Cats' day and they became champions for the 14th time in their history.

Galway lead by two points at half-time but Kilkenny started the second half strong with two quick frees from Denise Gaule.

A lovely Grace Walsh point with just over 10 minutes of normal time left to play suggested perhaps it was meant to be their day.

The sides were level on six different occasions and maybe years of hurt stood to ย Brian Dowling's side as they saw the game out.

They had lost in the showpiece in the last three consecutive years.

The penalty was rewarded in the 58th minute after Gaule was dragged down.

She stood up one-on-one with Galway goalkeeper Sarah Healy, who had no chance of stopping the strike, to send them three points clear and seal the deal.
