Johnny Sexton says his recovery is ahead of schedule and he's confident of being fit for Ireland's Six Nations opener with Scotland.

The Leinster and Ireland captain suffered a knee injury in December and recently returned to training with his province but wasn't risked in the last two Heineken Champions Cup pool games.

Sexton says he's very much on track to be ready to face the Scots in 10 days time:

"Everything's gone to plan so far so it always the aim to be back for the start of the Six Nations, I'm on track and if anything I'm a little bit ahead.

"Hopefully, I don't have any setbacks or anything like that over the next few days or week and I can get back training with the boys.

"It's a big honour to get the captaincy and it's not something I'm taking lightly. It's a big responsibility and yeah I just have to try and be myself. I've learned some lessons from being in that role with Leinster in recent years and hopefully, I can take them with me into this job.

The former world player of the year is hoping that Ireland can get off to a strong start against Scotland at the Aviva Stadium:

"When it comes to the Six Nations, you always have to try and win your home games if you want to be in with a shout and we've two to start with but all our focus is on that Scotland game first up.

"It's a different feeling in the camp already, there's new some coaches and new players, but it's quite exciting. It's an important ten days for us really to get things together, bed down what we want to achieve and what we want to stand for more importantly."
