John Giles rates Virgil van Dijk as arguably the best defender in the world. But he also feels the Liverpool centre-back can display arrogance.
The issue of the Netherlands player's gesticulating to team-mates came up on last night's Football Show and was put to John.
"I don't like it (the gesticulating). He's a terrific player, probably the best defender in the world," he said.
Arrogant?
"But I find him very, very arrogant. And even [against Napoli], he wasn't accepting the responsibility. I see him playing in matches like there's nothing on and he's shaking his hands like, 'Where are all these guys?' The goal was his fault last night but he was still pointing at somebody.
"He's a terrific player but I don't like that in a player because, in my opinion, you should never do anything on the pitch that is degrading your own players or having a go at them.
"You can say it next to them. If you're on the pitch and you're [beside them], the crowd don't know about it. I don't like it. I think he's a terrific player. All great players have an arrogance about them and he has that, which is confidence and that. But definitely, any time I see him making a mistake, I haven't seen him hold his hands up yet."
