Jim Gavin: "They were relentless from the very first ball"

Dublin got their Allianz League campaign back on track last night with a commanding eight point win over Mayo.

The Dubs were well worth their win, with Mayo keeper Rob Hennelly making a number of great saves to stop the game from turning into a blowout.

Dublin manager Jim Gavin was full of praise for his players when he spoke to Off the Ball's Stephen Doyle after the game.

“I think we’ve got to be satisfied from a Dublin perspective with the workmanlike performance from the Dublin players, I thought they were relentless from the very first ball,” Gavin said.

Gavin singled out Cormac Costello, who scored a goal and four points, as one of the top performers in the game.

“Cormac worked really hard in the off season so he’s very fresh and he’s obviously very fit now so that’s great to see.

“He’s a very skilful player, he works hard at the skills in the game but above all he’s a team player. I thought he set up some great scores and gave some great assists there during the game,” Gavin commented.

However, the Dublin manager was confused as to why the clock was allowed to run on for Lee Keegan’s sin bin after play was brought to a halt following an injury to one of the umpires.

“My interpretation of the rule was that if there’s an injury I thought the clock was stopped. That's what I was told when we had two players that had black cards, unfortunate black cards up in Monaghan. So we were down a man for twenty minutes in that game.”

Gavin was unconcerned with the ruling that Dublin would be continue to play two games in Croke Park should the reach the Super 8s.

“We’ll play in O’Toole Park, Parnell Park or any other park. We’ll play anywhere. I’ve no particular view on where we play. We’ll just turn up and get on with it and do our best,” Gavin said.

Dublin will go on to play Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park in the next round of the Allianz League as they look to secure their place in the Division One final.
