Jerome Garces to take charge of Rugby World Cup final

Jerome Garces has been appointed the referee for Saturday's Rugby World Cup final between England and South Africa in what will be his first time to take charge of the showpiece.

He also becomes the first French official to ref the final, he'll be assisted by fellow countryman Romain Poite and New Zealand's Ben O'Keeffe in Yokohama.

Ben Skeen of New Zealand will be the Television Match Official.

Garces took charge of South Africa's semi-final victory over Wales last weekend while Nigel Jones was ruled out of contention after suffering a calf injury in the other last-four clash between England and New Zealand.

"I'm honoured and delighted to be appointed to referee the 2019 World Cup final," 46-year-old Garces said of his appointment.

"It's a dream as a referee but this is a team sport. As a team of four, we'll be out there to do the best for the teams, the fans, the sport, but also the entire match officials team, selectors and support team.

"All of them have worked so hard over the last four years, culminating in the World Cup final."

England's Wayne Barnes will be the man in the middle for the third-place playoff between New Zealand and Wales.
