'We're developing and winning' | James Horan happy with Mayo progress

Mayo and Jame Horan's attempt to get promoted back into Divison One of the Allianz National Football League remain on track.

The Green and Red beat Meath by eight points in Castlebar on Sunday afternoon in Division Two South.

3-17 to 2-12 was the final score at Elverys MacHale Park in what was essentially a dead-rubber of a game since both sides had already secured their promotion semi-final spots.

James Carr scored two goals for James Horan's side with Cillian O'Connor also finding the back of the net for the home side, from the penalty spot.

Speaking to OTB Sports at full-time, Horan said it wasn't a perfect performance, but overall he was happy.

"I think we got a bit sloppy in the second half.

"Overall it's good to win and we're trying to change or tweak a few things, but overall it's a good day out and we got a few guys to get game time."

Horan was particularly impressed with Kilmeena clubman Jack Carney in midfield and the ever-reliable aidan O'Shea.

"He's [Carney] training with us very well and that's the avenue in. He's a very confident player and has fitted in very well, so we're happy with his progress.

"Aidan's a very good ballplayer, you know that for the last decade.

"His skills on the ball are very good, he reads it very well, so he was into the game very quickly.

"It's about developing and growing, each game we play that's what we're trying to do.

"We're trying to develop a sqaud. We're trying to tweek things, some of it's working, some of it's not but winning games along the way is good as well."

Myo will now face Clare in that Division Two promotion semi-final in two weeks time as they look to get back to the top tier after their relegation last season.

Horan is not underestimating the task ahead.

"We've played Clare over the years in a lot of challenge games.

"I think they're an excellent team, in how they set up and how they play the game.

"It's going to be a big battle and I look forward to it."

Looking ahead to the upcoming Championship season, Horan says they have quite a bit to go to be ready for that.

He said although his players were well able to cope with conditions on Sunday, they've still got a lot of preperation to do before their opening Connacht Championship game against Sligo.

"It's the first time we've played in that kind of heat for a while, but the condition some of those guys are in they should be ok and get used to it quickly.

"I think there are some patterns to be seen out there that are exactly how we want to play.

"It's good to see them but we're a long way off yet."
