"I’ve never seen as many kids out one-to-one with their dad" | David Brady on the 'new normal'

David Brady joined OTB AM on Tuesday morning speaking about how he has been reflecting and recalibrating during lockdown.

The former Mayo footballer told Ger and Eoin about how the coronavirus restrictions have given him unexpectedly simple opportunities to enjoy quality time with people, especially his kids.

"It’s a chance to recalibrate, it’s a chance to reset," says Brady of the last few weeks in lockdown.

"You know what, the way I’ve been living, the way I’ve been working. Is that the way forward or can we all get a better balance in life and appreciate the small things?" wondered the former Mayo star.
"We’re in a life that's not normal, things aren’t happening that always happened. We just have to compromise."
Life in lockdown has, to Brady's eyes, seen more kids spending quality time with their parents, especially fathers.
"Some of the nicest things I’ve seen and even talking to people over the last couple of days, people are out kicking a ball out the back garden or out the green with their dad again.
"I’ve never seen as many kids out one to one with their dad, or two kids and their dad out kicking the ball to each other in the park.
"You don’t see that anymore and for me, it’s the small things that I’m taking out of it."

A different way

Ger put it to Brady that "we have been wasting a bit of our time."
"Yeah, and do you know what, it’s a good time to reflect on everything else about what is going on in our lives. The way we work, the way we do things," replied Brady.
"I do a lot of travelling, I do a lot of running, racing around," admitted the Mayo man, before wondering, "Can you provide some of what I do, in a different way, in a different format, that saves me time and saves other people time?"
The true positive for Brady from the last couple of weeks in lockdown is the time he has gotten to spend with his children.
"For me, I know I have two kids aged six and two. I’ll never in my life until I retire (get this time again), and they’ll be well gone, they’ll be rid of me at that stage.
"I have never spent as much time with them, quality time or even ‘off" time, as the fella says, some of it."
From this experience and reflection, David Brady gave a little more advice, for both man and child.
"But do you know what, don’t lose the rag, and I tell them the same 'don’t lose the rag with daddy, I’m only here with you too.' But it’s good."
