'It's the weakest Manchester United midfield I've seen' | Kevin Kilbane

While Manchester United are having their fair share of troubles up front with injuries, Kevin Kilbane thinks it is midfield which is more concerning.

Speaking on Friday's OTB AMthe former Everton left-back was blunt in his assessment of that area of the team.

"I think this is probably the weakest midfield of any Man United side that I've ever seen.

"Even in recent weeks with the Leicester midfield, you could probably name players outside of the top six that would certainly get into Man United's midfield," Kilbane said.

In terms of the titles contenders, Kilbane doesn't think United's midfield is anywhere near the same quality.

"For all that we speak about the title race, Manchester City's midfield is obviously better.

"Liverpool's midfield isn't what you would consider a midfield that is capable of controlling a game, but it is way better than Man United's.

Counter-attacking game

"That's what I am saying, United's midfield is so weak they're never going to be able to control a game with those players," the former Irish international said.

While initially, United had a good run under Ole Gunner Solskjaer –winning eight games in a row – Kilbane felt the increased focus on keeping possession hasn't done them any favours.

"When Solskjaer first took over they were playing a counter-attacking game and he had to get that defence right because United were leaking goals late on under Mourinho.

"He solidified the defence and got them playing a good brand of counter-attacking football.

"Now though they're trying to dominate the ball a bit more, being a bit more expansive and they haven't got the players to do it," Kilbane stated.
