Ireland captain Rory Best feels his side have responded well since their shock defeat to Japan in Pool A at the Rugby World Cup.

They're through to the quarter-finals following today's bonus-point 47-5 victory over Samoa in Fukuoka and await either South Africa or holders New Zealand in the last-eight.

"After the Japan game, we knew that ten points would get us through. The boys rolled up their sleeves", Best said of the victory and Ireland's response since that loss to Japan.

"We knew that Samoa would come with no pressure on their shoulders, they would come at us in attack and defence. At times, it maybe wasn't that pretty but very effective.

"We share a lot of the leadership, we have some really smart players - some older, some younger - and we've built over the last two games. The big thing is, we never panicked. The most pressure we feel is the pressure we put on ourselves and we're in the quarter-final.

"We never really doubted ourselves. We looked back at the loss against Japan and knew that we let ourselves down, didn't do a lot of the things we pride ourselves on. This is more like us. On Monday, we'll look at how we're going to improve and how we'll have to improve going into the quarter-finals."

The final standings in the Pool will be determined on Sunday, whatever happens in Japan and Scotland's typhoon-threatened encounter.

Tournament hosts Japan will advance as the group winners should the typhoon lead to the game being canceled.
