Brian Kerr believes that the players coming through youth academies now expect such levels of information that coaches need to keep up with their demands.
In the discussion on Virgin Media Sport, Kerr spoke about his experience of younger players coming through youth academies and how it differs from his start in the game.
"The modern player, with what goes on when they are developing under the various academies, they expect more help. They expect information.
"They expect more analysis. They know that the opposition will have it about them, too.
"It is up to the players what they are prepared to take on board; how confident they feel about themselves and whether they need the information that is available.
"I think that the managers and coaches should supply the information."
Kerr spoke of his time in charge of the Republic of Ireland as an example of how things have changed.
"When I was managing Ireland, the media threw one out that I was giving the players too much information.
"They hadn't got any idea of what we were doing, in terms of match preparation.
"They were quite short video presentations because the players' attention spans were quite short!
"They put this out because it wasn't being done so much before.
"Why, if it is right in other sports, is it not acceptable in our sport?
"In recent years, Trappatoni would have spent a good bit of time that Martin [O'Neill] didn't.
"I thought that when we watched the games, when we watched the games, that players did not know what to expect from the opposition.
