Watford claim vital win against poor Manchester United side

Paul Pogba made his first appearance for Manchester United since September, in a 2-0 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

This was a vital win for Nigel Pearson's side, who built on a solid performance against Liverpool last week with a solid display against a disjointed United side.

The Hornets went into the match at the bottom of the Premier League, and goals from Ismaïla Sarr and a penalty from Troy Deeney settled the game in a fashion belying their league position.

Watford could have had a couple more with some clear-cut chances falling to Gerard Deulofeu and Deeney thanks to lacklustre United defending.

That defending was in no way helped by a staggering moment of ineptitude from David De Gea. Sarr was free in the penalty area following a floated free-kick, and De Gea fumbled the ball at his near post straight into the net.

The Spaniard's form is becoming an increasing concern to Manchester United supporters, as his previously-assured performances usually leant on his shot-stopping ability. This was a moment to forget for De Gea, coming at a time where United can least afford to lose points.

This was in no way helped by an uncharacteristic poorly-timed lunge from Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Sarr just four minutes.

What had been a positive ten days for United - with wins over Tottenham, Manchester City and AZ Alkmaar - has reverted to type with the home draw to Everton and this loss.

Nigel Pearson appears to injected a discipline into Watford without sacrificing the pace and technique they have in the wide positions. This bodes well for Watford, after a very encouraging performance last week at Anfield.

Sarr is settling into the side and adding a real pace alongside the physicality and nous of Troy Deeney.

Manchester United supporters will be looking at a team that lacked conviction and energy, and wondering whether reinforcements will be coming in January.
