WATCH: Visiting Hungary fans clash with police and stewards at Wembley

The grim reputation of Hungary football fans plummeted to new depths on Tuesday night.

A section of the travelling support clashed with stewards and police early in the World Cup qualifying meeting of England and Hungary.

It's the latest incident involving Magyar fans which has seen both UEFA and FIFA inflict stadium bans for their behaviour in Budapest.

As England players took the knee in their fight against racism, there was widespread applause from the home fans. However, as reported by multiple journalists at the stadium several Hungary supporters responded by booing and gesturing towards their hosts.

Things, however, got even uglier shortly after kick-off.

As stewards tried to calm the situation, they were met with violence from some of those Hungary fans.

The police quickly got involved, which did little to quell the anger of some of those in the away section.

Stewards and police retreated, and were replaced by the riot squad.

Matters were somewhat calmed by 12-minutes.

The reputation of Hungary fans had already been subterranean following shameful scenes at Euro 2020, and during last month's reverse fixture with England.

Racist and homophobic chants during all three of their group games at the Euros saw Hungary hit with a stadium ban by UEFA.

Then last month, both Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham were subjected to monkey chants as England ran out comfortable winners at the Puskas Arena.

Last week's Group I contest with Albania played out behind closed doors as a result of those incidents against England, with their FA also fined €185,000.

They'd had another stadium ban suspended by FIFA, pending further incidents.
