We had a very fascinating interviewee on Friday Night Racing this week as Ger Gilroy and Johnny Ward were joined by Ted Walsh.
Ted is father to outstanding jockeys Katie and Ruby Walsh. The renowned trainer discussed his children's exploits in their racing careers as well as his own early days and favourite horses.
Charity bet
The Co Kildare based trainer paid tribute to Commanche Court and spoke of how broken-hearted he was when the horse passed away.
He also explained how life took him from living in the USA as a youth to returning to his native Fermoy.
He also discussed his own experience as a jockey and his regrets at not going professional. Before he became a racehorse trainer, Ted first came to public attention as a top-class amateur rider. He was 11-time Champion Amateur Rider in Ireland and enjoyed four successes at the Cheltenham Festival. Prince Charles even rode in one of the Cheltenham races with him.
Meanwhile, Johnny also shared his own charity bet for the weekend in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund.
