Welcome to week seven of Virtual Insanity, where we spend virtual money to try and win virtual money on golf betting. It's that simple!
The pot is at €922 entering this week's pair of tournaments, the WGC Mexico Championship and Puerto Rico Open.
The action starts on Thursday.
First up, I am selecting two golfers in the WGC Mexico Championship:
Our first selection is Rory McIlroy for €5 each way at 6/1. (1/4 the odds the first 5 places with Bet 365)
McIlroy is on the brink of another win and carries brilliant recent form and course form into this event. The Holywood star has finished in the top five in his last five tournament appearances. He had every chance to win at the Genesis Open last week before a triple bogey in the final round derailed his challenge. McIlroy was second in Mexico last year and tied for seventh in 2017. Dustin Johnson won by five shots from McIlroy 12 months ago, but there was then another five shots to the chasing pack. So the course fits Rory's eye and he's a strong favourite. Sometimes the answer is obvious.
Our second selection in Mexico is Rafael Cabrera Bello for €3 each way at 80/1. (1/5 the odds the first 7 places with Sky Bet)
Spaniard Cabrera Bello is a lively outsider in my view at a tasty price. He has recorded finishes of 38th, 3rd and 19th in three starts in Mexico, and finished inside the top 20 in Los Angeles last week. A strong ball striker, Cabrera Bello doesn't win that often, but he's inside the world's top 50 and posted a tied 12th finish in Abu Dhabi at the start of the year. So his game is in nick and the track form is there to contend.
Our selection for the Puerto Rico Open is Kiradech Aphibarnrat for €2 each way at 60/1. (1/4 the odds the first 5 places with Bet 365)
Over the last couple of years, Aphibarnrat has posted tied fifth and tied third finishes at the WGC Mexico. This week, he takes a step down in grade for the secondary event in Puerto Rico. The Thai golfer has never played at Coco Beach, but in a weaker field, he could outrun generous odds of 60/1. He's won four times on the European Tour and is no back number. It's a risk, but this tournament has thrown up all kinds of identikit winners with no set trends. It's a €4 risk worth taking.
So that's €20 wagered on this week's golf.
