Celebrated jockey Patrick Mullins was the first guest on Off the Ball's new segment, Friday Night Racing.

He joined Ger and Johnny Ward to discuss his career to date, how he has coped with carrying the family name and his plans for the future.

Despite being the son of legendary trainer Willie Mullins, Patrick has emerged from his father's shadow and won his first race on Diego Garcia in 2006.

He has since won a record-breaking 546 winners after he rode Queens Boulevard to victory on 16th July, earlier this week.

He has been crowned the champion amateur jockey 10 times and asked about the pressure he feels coming from a horse racing dynasty, he told Ger: "That's what every jockey wants, what every sportsman and sportswoman wants - you want that pressure of being in the right position.

"Everything that I have at the moment comes from what my parents built in Closutton and what my grandparents built in Doninga before that.

"And, my grandfather, the boss, isn't around anymore. He was there for my first winner alright but he passed away a few years ago but my grandmother, Maureen - I think she's getting younger all the time - it's great to still have her there. She has seen the whole family evolve and get to where we are now," he added.

Despite his success, Mullins makes it a point to celebrate the wins after seeing what has happened to others in the industry.

"It's a dangerous game and you have to celebrate the good days. As you get older - there are a lot of disappointments so you have to celebrate the good days because there's so many disappointments.

"I'm very lucky, I ride a lot of good horses and I have a strike rate of 30% which is quite high but that still means for every three horses I win on - I get beat on seven."
