THE OTB AM BREAKFAST MENU | Mickey Harte, Klopp on Brexit & sharing rugby talent

Every Tuesday morning here on OffTheBall.com, we are bringing you The OTB AM Breakfast Menu - our panel’s take on the most interesting talking points in the world of sport.

There’s plenty on the agenda this week.

We’re talking; Mickey Harte vs. The GAA. The era-defining rivalry developing in Ladies Football. What does Jurgen Klopp have to say about Brexit, and should it matter? Irish Rugby’s Talent Share - is it fair? And what’s the story with parents brainwashing their kids to support the English Football team they follow…

Check out this morning’s chat between Ger and Cliona Foley below, and subscribe to Off The Ball over on our YouTube channel.

MICKEY HARTE vs. THE GAA

Over the weekend, a video featuring Mickey Harte and a number of other GAA personalities appeared on social media as they launched the ‘Gaelic Athletes for a No Vote’ in Dublin - it caused a stir and the GAA came out and distanced themselves from the video, making it clear that they had no opinion or side in the referendum, Ger and Cliona had their say this morning - as Cliona picked out an interesting tactic employed by the organisation, and made the point that they weren’t the first sportspeople in this country to use their status to try and wield an influence.

If you want to read a bit more, Malachy Clerkin’s piece in Monday’s Irish Times is well worth your time!

THE ERA-DEFINING RIVALRY IN LADIES FOOTBALL

Last year’s All-Ireland Football Final between Dublin and Mayo shattered attendances for a women’s sport event in 2017. It was a cracking game too, as two late Dublin goals helped them pull away from the challenge of Mayo and finally secure another All-Ireland. Now, they’ll meet again in the 2018 Division 1 league final, Mayo holding off Cork, and Dublin snatching victory in the dying moments against Galway.

Cliona brought us up to speed on the rivalry that’s defining an era…

Check out that smashing Nicole Owens injury-time goal that sent Dublin into the League Final.

JURGEN KLOPP CALLS FOR A BREXIT REVOTE

“Even on the abortion referendum, we’re seeing that athletes and managers are multi-faceted and multi-dimensional people - and I think that’s what we want to know, we mightn’t agree with them always, but it’s good to see it.”

You can read Klopp’s fascinating chat with Donald McRae over at The Guardian!

IRISH RUGBY’S TALENT SHARE - IS IT FAIR?

Joey Carbery or Ross Byrne to Ulster? Who makes the decision, and forgetting about the personal feelings of the players, would it be the right move for their careers? Brian O’Driscoll was on OTB AM on Monday and he had his say.

BRAINWASHING THE KIDS

Have you ever asked yourself, why you support the English football club that you do? Cliona Foley has an interesting theory!

By the way, talking about Liverpool and Manchester United, check out Joe Molloy’s fascinating chat with Michael Owen on The Football Show when you get the chance!
