"That's unusual for me" - Padraig Harrington struck by unexpected media nerves

"There's a lot going on!" - No understatement from Padraig Harrington there.

Named Ryder Cup captain for 2020 on Monday, the Dubliner faced the press yesterday in a hectic 24 hours.

As the news sinks in, he joined Joe Molloy on Off The Ball on Tuesday.

"It's a little bit scary that. It kind of feels like you're getting to the end of your career," he joked.

"It's here and I really mean it. It's here. That's certainly being brought home to me over the last couple of years with the well-wishes and the texts.

"It's a different feel to it. I'm not my own boss anymore."

And he also admitted that he was more nervous than usual doing his media duties.

"You know, I didn't think I was [nervous]. But when I finished up with the media yesterday, I was wiped and that's unusual for me now," he said.

"It took more out of me than I expected."

Being careful

Harrington went on to explain how media duties will differ from his playing career.

"I have to be a little bit more thoughtful, no doubt about it. I am representing the Ryder Cup now so I can't necessarily throw out flippant comments," he said.

"Obviously something that's funny when you say it, isn't necessarily funny when it goes down in print. You have to be careful that you're not too challenging in your statements.

"So because the Ryder Cup is such a big international, because it's a competitive match - one on one - there is an element of people who are writing the stories, the media... they want a big story.

"They want the contentious story in some ways. So it is a slightly different media focus for me. With the tour, I have a permanent media guy with me all the time. When it comes to doing this stuff, everything goes through [him]. Before, it was just me and my manager and most of the time I just did it myself.

"But now everything goes through the tour. It's checked."
