Sunday Paper Review: “Has this golden generation come too late?”

Joe Molloy was joined by Cliona Foley and Mick O’Keefe on the Sunday Paper Review to reflect on Ireland’s historic first Test against Pakistan in Malahide.

Ireland made an immediate mark on the Test scene as they held their own against their experienced opponents.

A near-capacity crowd witnessed a moment 141 years in the making as players and spectators soaked up the atmosphere.

Discussing the sport’s profile in Ireland, the panel believe the sport has garnered a misleading reputation.

“Cricket has a long tradition here and I think it’s been unfairly maligned,” O’Keefe said.

“The question is has this golden generation come too late? I think it’s a huge boost for Irish cricket. The other thing is whether our weather and attention spans are better suited to T20 style cricket, and would we be better off pouring our resources into that?

“It’s a great day for Irish sport when you see some of the pictures being posted from Malahide.”

And Foley believes cricket is deserving of its moment in the spotlight.

“I think our media coverage is so concentrated on the big three or four that it’s great to see other sports get their day in the sun,” Foley said.
